What data do we collect?
BanyanDNA collects the following data:
- Personal identification information (names, email addresses)
- Note that you are not required to use your real name when creating an account or signing up for our mailing list.
- Project data saved while using the web application, which may include one or more of the following:
- Genetic data: shared DNA amounts and shared DNA segment data.
- Personal information such as names, sex, birth and death dates, birth and death locations.
- Any other information you choose to save while using the application.
- Anonymized usage data, including your operating system, internet browser, and geolocation data.
How do we collect your data?
You are in control of the data we collect from you. Every piece of personally-identifying information (PII) we store is only stored at your request. Specifically, we collect and process data when you:
- Register for a BanyanDNA account.
- Create and save projects on BanyanDNA's web application.
- Join the BanyanDNA mailing list via our main website (https://www.banyandna.com) or at the same time you create an account.
- Use our website or web application (anonymized usage data collection)
How will we use your data?
Our company collects your data so that we can:
- Manage your account.
- Save your projects' data.
- Provide customer support.
- Understand the usage of our services.
- Email you with information critical to managing or protecting your account.
- Email you with notices where required by law, such as major changes to our privacy policy or terms of service.
- Email you with newsletters, announcements, or special offers.
We share your data with select third party companies strictly for the normal operation of our core business. The companies we partner with are as follows:

BanyanDNA does not sell your data to any third-party companies.
How do we store your data?
BanyanDNA stores your data using Amazon Web Services (AWS), which provides services for processing and storing data. All data stored on AWS is encrypted in transit and at rest, meaning your data would not be readable if AWS suffers a security breach.
BanyanDNA team members cannot see your project data accidentally. We will not view your project data without your permission.
Marketing
If you have opted to join our mailing list, we will send you emails containing news, announcements, and special offers. You can always unsubscribe from the mailing list by clicking the "Unsubscribe" link provided in the footer of every marketing email.
Note that you may receive transactional emails that you cannot unsubscribe from for security or legal reasons. These include:
- Emails sent to confirm your email address.
- Emails sent to confirm the creation of your account.
- Emails sent to confirm your joining of our mailing list.
- Emails sent to notify you of critical changes to your account's information, such as passwords.
- Emails sent to notify you of major changes to our privacy policy or terms of service.
What are your data protection rights?
We would like to ensure you are aware of your data protection rights. - The right to delete your data. You can request that BanyanDNA deletes all of your personal data, including your account, under certain conditions.
- The right to restrict or object to processing. You have the right to restrict or object to BanyanDNA's processing of your data--particularly for marketing purposes--under certain conditions.
- The right to non-discrimination. You have the right to not be discriminated against for exercising one of these rights.
If there are any additional data privacy rights that are granted by your country or region, we will honor your request to exercise those rights.
